United checking its 757 jetliners

CHICAGO (UPI) -- United Airlines said it is in the process of temporarily grounding its U.S. fleet of Boeing 757 jetliners to check modifications made to air-data computers.

The inspection of 96 jetliners is expected to be completed Wednesday but it could disrupt travel plans of thousands of passengers, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The move comes after United realized it failed to properly comply with steps required by the Federal Aviation Administration to check work done on the air-data computers.

The computers record air speed, air pressure and other parameters in flight that are used for critical cockpit functions like autopilot.

United began canceling flights Tuesday, an airline spokeswoman said. She said the inspections take 50 to 90 minutes and are being performed on airplanes that are already on the ground at their destinations.

No planes are being diverted, she added.

United uses its 757s on domestic routes.

The fleet is about 18 years old on average, the airline spokeswoman said.
