WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Senior White House adviser Dan Shapiro is expected to be nominated as the next U.S. ambassador to Israel, people knowledgeable of the situation said.
A formal announcement is expected soon, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.
Shapiro is the National Security Council's senior director for the Middle East and North Africa. He regularly went to Israel and worked with U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell to try to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.
Jewish and Palestinian officials in the United States said Shapiro would be a good choice, the Post said.
"Dan's a great guy, a perfect choice," said Steve Rabinowitz, who worked with Shapiro in the Clinton White House. "He cares deeply about (the issues), sees all sides, and really, I just don't know a person in Washington or the region who doesn't like him."
Ziad Asali, president of the American Task Force on Palestine, also welcomed news of the potential nomination.
"Dan will make an excellent ambassador," Asali said, stressing that his comments were unofficial since no official announcement has been made. "He has a grasp of the complexity of the game and knowledge of all the main players, and is committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict."
