BAMAKO, Mali (UPI) -- A crowd seeking the blessing of an imam after a speech in a stadium in Mali caused a stampede in which at least 36 people died, officials said Tuesday.
At least 60 people were injured in the crush of humanity at the 25,000-seat stadium in the Malian capital of Bamako during a celebration of Maouloud, the prophet Muhammad's birthday, the BBC reported.
The crowd wanted to be blessed by Imam Osman Madani Haidara, a popular religious figure in Mali, after his remarks but the uncontrolled rush caused a stampede.
Most of the dead were crushed against fencing as they waited to leave, Mali's minister of interior security and civil protection said.
A witness said nearly all of the dead were women, the BBC reported.
