MERCED, Calif. (UPI) -- Police in Merced, Calif., say a man allegedly lived with a dead relative for nearly 30 days, using the dead man's ATM card to get shopping and gambling money.
Merced County Sheriff's Department said Patrick Lara, 45, was supposed to be taking care of his 63-year-old uncle, Adrian Lugo, who injured his arm in a fall last month.
Instead, Lara allegedly left his uncle in bed to die without notifying anyone, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Lara, who lived in his uncles' home as a caregiver, helped Lugo into bed and left him there, checking on him periodically, Deputy Tom Mackenzie said.
At some point, Mackenzie said, Lara realized Lugo had died but did not call paramedics or inform family members.
Instead, he allegedly took Lugo's ATM card and spent the older man's money shopping and visiting casinos, authorities said.
Some of Lugo's relatives went to the house in Merced Sunday to visit while Lara was gone and discovered the body, Mackenzie said.
Lara was being held Wednesday at Merced County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, elder abuse and theft by a caretaker, police said.
