Small earthquakes in active Calif. area

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Two small earthquakes were recorded in a seismically active area of California where minor temblors occur almost daily, authorities said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the small earthquakes, a 2.2 temblor followed about 12 hours later by a 2.4 shaking, rattled the Geysers area of Sonoma and Lake counties early Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

No injuries or damage were reported, the newspaper said.

The epicenters of both quakes were within a few of miles of the Geysers area.

The Geysers area is named for the steam generated by water and molten rock far below the earth's surface and experiences frequent earthquakes, including a 4.5 temblor recorded in the 1970s, the Chronicle said.
