CAIRO (UPI) -- The Egyptian government said Wednesday at least 365 people died in the popular uprising that led to the toppling of the Hosni Mubarak regime.
Cairo also said more than 5,500 were injured during the three weeks of anti-government demonstrations, The Washington Post reported.
Health Minister Sameh Farid said authorities were still collecting information from hospitals, morgues and victims' families, so the final accounting could be higher.
The first official numbers from the government mirror the casualty estimates assembled by Human Rights Watch the during 18 days of protests, the Post said.
The widespread demonstrations by Egyptians weary of high unemployment, government corruption and lack of freedom forced Mubarak to resign Friday, ending his 30-year rule. Elections are expected to be held by this fall with the military maintaining control until then.
