Mubarak lawyer denies vast wealth claims

CAIRO (UPI) -- Hosni Mubarak has provided a financial statement and his lawyer denied reports he has $70 billion, Egypt's state news agency MENA said Monday.

Mubarak's lawyer said the deposed president filed the report in compliance with the law and denied media claims that the 30-year ruler and his family have $70 billion in wealth around the world.

The Guardian has estimated the family could have that sum in British and Swiss banks, European, Egyptian and U.S. real estate and other assets.

Meanwhile, Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud asked the governor of the Central Bank of Egypt Monday to freeze the assets of 25 former ministers and businessmen associated with the Mubarak regime while corruption charges are investigated, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

The figures mentioned include Mubarak's son Gamal, former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, former Military Production Minister Sayyed Meshaal, former Health Minister Hatem al-Gebali, businessman Mohamed Abdul Enein and Magdi Rasekh, father-in-law of the president's other son, Alaa.
